Start the New Year with a new look for your home

The start of the year is a great time to tackle a few simple household jobs and get your property organised for 2012.

1.     Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarms – when did you last change the batteries and do you know most alarms have a limited lifespan? Check the manufacturers date and buy a new one if it’s over 10 years old – don’t put your life and your family’s at risk for a few pounds.

2.     Boiler – have you had it serviced this winter? It will be more efficient after a full service. Also do you have a programmable thermostat? .If not install one to cut down on heating costs

3.     Cleaning – don’t wait until the spring start now. Clean your gutters, clean your windows, clean your carpets. All inexpensive things that will brighten up your home.

4.     Decorate – if you haven’t decorated for some years try doing just one room – you’ll soon realise how tired and dull your house has become. If you search on line for furnishing bargains it needn’t be expensive to get a new look. Focus on a theme or colour for a new vibrant feel. Research has shown that living in a property we are proud of makes us feel happier and more confident.

5.     More even than in 2011 this year will test nearly everyone’s finances. Think of ways to save money in your home. Use less water – water itself is expensive and you pay to heat it. Turn lights off. Get your house well insulated. Try heavier curtains in the winter. Look at solar heating options.

With the property market still in decline the option of moving isn’t going to be available for most people in 2012 so if you need more space or want a lighter, brighter house look at what you can improve where you are. For example a loft conversion is cheaper than moving or building an extension and decorating and re-modeling your current house certainly is.

2012 is going to be a trying year for all so make your home a sanctuary where you can escape the pressures of the outside world.
